Twitter epilogue

"I wonder if these fucktard gun-huggers realize the moment they show up at a Presidential event with an AK-47, they're put on a watch list."

Oh, so you're just another 1984-style fascist. Right, don't need any more of those in my life than I had two days ago. Unfollowed, and good riddance. I have other sources for link aggregation that are much kinder to my blood pressure.

Today's knowledge reinforcement through unpleasant experience: There are authoritarians on both sides of the aisle. ;)

Intellectually I knew that, but it's just so disheartening to run up against in real life. I'd feel pretty lonely if it weren't for the folks here to remind me that I'm not the only anti-authoritarian left.

Ignoring his rather biased description of gun enthusiasts, he's probably sadly right. I disagree that people who show up at rallies openly carrying should be on such lists, but they are likely to be so.

I'll take "Hurting my own causes" for $200, Alex.

It's worse - those that are on the fence about gun control will look at people (who are doing this legally, I might add) get nervous and vote for more restrictive gun regulations.

I'm a strong believer that they have the right to bear arms. But BOY is this going to be spun in ways they're going to hate.

Coincidentally enough, it was Ernest Hancock who told me there were two ways to respond to this:

  1. Try to go unnoticed and stay off all the possible lists they could create.
  2. Be so loud and obnoxious that if they ever decided to do more than put you on a list, everyone would notice you were gone.

Ever since then, I find these sorts of threats rather amusing. You're gonna' put me on a list? Martin Luther King was on a list. Pretty much anyone who ever accomplished anything politically has been on a list. For political activists, it's almost shameful not to be on a list!

Michael Jackson was on a list.

Can someone with talent do a "I'm on a list" parody of "I'm on a boat"?

Isn't the mere existence of such watch lists rather the point of the demonstration anyways?

Inorite? Never mind, like [info]praecorloth said, he was probably nine billion kinds of indignant about the no-fly list, and I doubt he has any nice words for J. Edgar Hoover either.

Not all of us have the right to own a gun. I, for example, do not. If I did have the right and felt comfortable owning one, however, I don't think I would brandish it at a protest rally.

The reasons for owning a gun, IMO, do no include using the implied force of arms as a means of communicating one's dislike for political policy. I prefer a ballot to a bullet in these cases.

However, I would defend the right of others to do what I feel is unreasonable, because I want those same people to defend my rights when they find them unpleasant.

"Carrying" and "brandishing" are very different things.

Exactly. Hell, I've argued in the last few days that it would be wrong and dangerous for the government to take Bill O'Reilly or Glenn Beck off the air, because I don't want a hypothetical future ultra-right-wing government having any increased ability to take ultra-liberals off the air.

I bet you could go back in his twitter or whatever and find some juicy rants about the no-fly list. Why is one list not okay but another list is just fine?

[info]maradydd

I could, but I have come to the conclusion that I have better things to do with my time. There are some people I can help, and some people I can't.

"I wonder if these fucktard gun-huggers realize the moment they show up at a Presidential event with an AK-47, they're put on a watch list."

With regards to gun owners in the USA - if the quoted speaker thinks that we aren't "on a list" already, I submit that he or she is not paying much attention to the record keeping requirements upon FFLs or to the existence of the NICS audit logs.

Oh my God. I want to have your babies.

I still think it'd be awesome to have something in there about crypto, but I have no idea where to put it.

ETA: Though I do think it's possible to push the bipartisan angle a little -- maybe change "Can't go to rallies" to "Can't protest the war", for instance.
