One for the biologists

me!
Why is it, then, that when you cut off the circulation to some point in your body (say, the foot you were sitting on), at first the nerve endings go dead and then they start firing like crazy? Is it some sort of nerve ending celebration ("Yay, we have blood again!"), like rednecks on the 4th of July?

How long would you have to cut off circulation for the nerve endings to just cease working full stop?

(This has nothing whatsoever to do with me hopping around Derek's living room on one foot and saying "fuck" a lot, really it doesn't.)
