Stupid Internet tricks

me!
Encouraged by the fact that I apparently know more about networking than DSL techs (stay tuned for the story when it appears, probably next month -- the short version is, why on earth do not only first-level but *second*-level SWBell DSL techs not know that a MAC-address is part of the firmware on your DSL modem and does not even remotely mean that the user has a Macintosh computer?), I've enabled IIS on my Win2K installation.

If you can figure out what my IP is, and I'm online when you try, you might even be able to telnet to my machine.

I don't know why I'm so pleased about this. I know very little about Win2K's security holes, of which I imagine there are plenty, though I did take the precaution of unsharing all my drives (we don't have a network at home yet and C-kun has no reason to access any of my files via his laptop, since he could just turn on my desktop instead). But there is something cool about pointing your browser at localhost and getting the default page you set up. :P

There's no trial like a trial by fire!
